He is a (John Doe) II and when he married my friend he applied as (John Doe) III. He is married in AL as the II. I checked the state in which he claims he was divorced (AL) and they have no record of his divorce, just his marriage. How do I find divorce records if I don't know where the person was divorced?

She needs to find out if she married to a married man. What should she do if she is? How can she find out without paying an arm and a leg?

  1. just report him to the authorities cops police etc.

  2. Marriage certificates are a matter of public records, so she could just request them online through each state that he may have marriages in.

In the meantime, maybe she should consider divorcing a man who has other wives. Just throwing that out there.

  3. Don't know about other states, but here in Michigan (at least this is how it was 20 years ago) on your application you must state how many previous times you were married. And you must provide copies of your divorce decrees. Since your friend says he married her under a different name, he probably didn't do this. I say... hire a lawyer FIRST, then ask him point blank to show proof of his divorce or allow her to obtain it from the applicable state/county records. Or grant her a quick and amiable divorce. He probably doesn't want the publicity any more than she does.

  4. Divorce records are county records, you need to know the state and county and date the divorce occurred.

You cannot get this information from the state, you need to know the county.

    Ask him which county.
