NaOH and HCl react to form Na+, Cl-, and water. Which of the following statements is true?

a)Na+ is an anion, and Cl- is a cation

b)Na+ and Cl- are both anions

c)a hydrogen bond can form between Na+ and Cl-

d)Na+ and Cl- are electrolytes

e)Na+ is an acid, and Cl- is a base

if you could tell me how you got your answer too that would be really great.

and this isn't homework you're doing for me. I'm trying to study for a quiz the things I don't have a clue about.

I don't know how to find this one.

  1. a cannot be correct because Na+ is not an anion [an anion is an ion with a negative charge] and neither is cl- a cation [a positively charged ion]

and from looking at all other answers i would have to say d is correct because they are electrolytes.

  2. The answer is D. They are electrolytes

A is the opposite of what is correct. An anion is a negative ion and a cation is a positive ion. This fact also makes B incorrect.

C-The dissolving of salt in water occurs because of the natural polarity. What polarity means is that, although the water has an overall neutral charge, one part of it is relatively negative compared to the other. This is due to electronegativity. Oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen and so the negatively charged electrons spend more of their time around the oxygen atom making it more negative.

SO, when salt is introduced it breaks up into ions and the positive sodium ions are surrounded by the oxygen portion of water molecules and, similarly, the negatively charged chlorine ions are surrounded by the positive portion of water (the hydrogen atoms).

    E. is wrong because it doesn't meet any of the acid-base definitions

  3. a)Na+ is an anion, and Cl- is a cation

Na+ and Cl- are ions. All the other statements are wrong. So only (a) is right.
