Question:

BIRD LOVERS: Can anyone help me identify this bird?

It is a black bird with white patches on its shoulders (no red)and a white stripe on the end of its tail. It is about 6 inches long. It was perched on a fencepost in an open agricultural field in central Connecticut. I have seen birds with this marking only three times in the past seven years. At first I thought it was a variation of a red-winged blackbird, but now I'm not sure.

The closest I can identify it to is something like a Lark Bunting which doesn't live around here, or an Eastern Kingbird, except it didn't have the white breast.

Anyone have any ideas?

  1. It sounds alot like a mockingbird.

  2. Not sure what bird this could be, where do you live?

This is NOT A LOVE BIRD.

  3. Could it be this:

Tricolored Heron - Once known as the Louisiana Heron, this bird is commonly confused with the little blue heron until it turns to face you. A white stripe down its throat and chest, widening to cover its belly, differentiates this bird. The tricolored heron has a white top notch of feathers during its breeding times that looks like the hair of Dennis the Menace, standing up and not knowing which way to lie down.

I also included an image of a titmouse as well as a site that allows you to search using several factors that may be a help.

    Good luck!

  4. Maybe it's an escaped Myna.

  5. It's hard to say without a picture considering there are many birds which look similar, maybe next time you can try to get some photo

  6. could it be a warbler

  7. Sounds like it could be a Northern Mockingbird. I see alot of them around here too.

  8. As already noted, this is more than likely the Northern Mockingbird.  As you go further north of CT, they are far more common.  They usually arrive not too long after the robin and are noted for their very extensive and varied singing.  In the early evenings, when they are seeking mates, they are extremely vocal (and loud)
