BIRDS FLY INTO MY WINDOWS AND GET HURT!!!!!?

I feel so terrible about birds flying into my windows and getting hurt / dazed / or even killed. I have feeders and bird baths and they love coming here. They're all kinds. But I feel guilty, too, because they fly into the windows. I KNOW it's the "reflection" in them that causing them to do it. . .because it's reflecting the landscaping and they think it's just a continuum of the yard.

I've tried putting up "streamers" and such to help divert them. . .and it HAS helped. . .but what ELSE could I do ?!? It's terrible to watch it happen !

  1. Hang pie pans or wind chimes up, thats what we had to do to keep them from flying into the window.  Of course there will still be a couple that fly into your window, but not as many.

  2. Try to find some of those sticker things that they use at the zoos. they have like all sorts of diferent ones im sure. There probably the decal that were mentioned up there actually.

  3. .We used to have feeders and a bird bath at our old house and it was fun watching them.  We had it close enough that we could watch them, but not so close that they flew toward windows.  My suggestion is to move the feeders and bath  to a place in the yard so that you can still see them, but not have it so close that they mistake your window as a source of more food, etc.

  4. Have you tried window decals...NOT of raptors..but they make others that reflect ultravioloet light so the bird knows there is a barrier there. You should not have the feeder and baths close to the window..they may see the feeder reflection in the window as well and are trying to fly to it.  Try to get them AWAY from your windows.  Look for decals here:

Also, you can try drawing curtains or closing shades to make the window less reflective.  Other tips here as well:

  5. Check to phone book to find a Farm Supply store in your area. They usually carry decals or stickers of hawks or other birds to put on the glass.

They also should carry statues of owls to set outside your window to scare birds away. Just be sure you move this statue every few days, or the birds will soon realize that it is not a real bird!

    Good luck

  6. I know how you feel, we get that a lot particularly when the young fletchlings begin to explore and use the feeders and sometimes they don't half go with a thud.

Check out the RSPB online store as they have stickers in the shape of a swallow to go on your windows which have been designed to deter birds from flying into them. They're the type of stickers which can peel off easily without marking or leaving any marks etc so they won't make a mess of your windows.

One of our neighbours is an ornithologist and she's provided us with a small drawstring bag which we can put any dazed birds into to allow them to recover and remain safe from cats and other birds. The bag is made out of a similar material to the small glass cleaning cloths you get for specs. Perhaps you could invest in one of those to use in the event that a bird flies into your windows.

    Best of luck!

  7. they have decals you can stick onto the windows...don't know if it will completely stop it but its worth a try. This happens at my house too. It is sad!
