Question:

BIRDSEED PROBLEM: Now what do I do, I washed the seeds and tried to dry them but the sun set, OMG!?!?

[ When we buy birdseeds they're not always in their optimum sanitary condition, so bird keepers should always wash them, dry them and store them properly when feeding these to their birds. ]

I washed my newest pack of birdseed and left it out in the sun to dry, but it seems I didn't do it early enough because by nightfall it was still moist. This isn't good because bacteria can accumulate and fungi might grow.

So my question is, how can I dry these seeds? I have no hairdrier at home, and using the microwave would only cook the seeds. Should I just give up and make them into sprouts?

  1. I always put my seeds in the freezer for a few days to kill any moths that might have gotten into it.   My bird loved sprouted seeds

  2. Let the birds feed through nature like all the other birds in the world do.

  3. Don't wash seed again.  Maybe put them in an oven and dry them out.

  4. For pet bird seed, the proper way to sanatize kill bacteria and mites' eggs in the seed is to store them in a freezer for 2 days, or in a refridgerator for 5 days.

You *should not wash them* because washing them will only help the mites' eggs grow and develop.  I remember one time I didn't freeze my birdseed.  One day I woke up with well over 200 little black insects crawling all over my bedroom floor, on my bed, on *ME*.

Next time, try freezing the seeds to eliminate the mites' eggs, bacteria, etc.

    Best of luck,

    Phoenix.

  5. Nitrogen is the proper way to clean the seeds and Volkman is the only one I know that is doing it.

  6. perhaps put them in the refrigerator so not much bacteria will grow overnight and to make them less likely to sprout. then put them in the sun the first thing tomorrow. but seriously do you have studies that show you should be washing bird seed. they eat stuff right off the ground everyday. just because you wouldn't eat it doesn't mean wild animals wouldn't. since they evolved eating dirty non washed seed perhaps they might even digest it better that way

  7. give it to them wet ,they eat it wet in the wild, and dirty too .i have never washed my birds seed yet
