Personally, I'm a wrestler. But a lot of mixed martial artists these days are getting into BJJ, and it seems like its growing in popularity these days among mma figther wanna-be's.

So the question is, what is more dominant? BJJ or wrestling.

  1. In todays current climate I'd suggest Bjj :)***

  2. A BJJ practicioner has many more ways to finish a fight. Rather than trying to find which is better, start training in BJJ so you know both. BJJ is alot about joint locks, and chokes. Wrestling is about takedowns and control. If your a decent wrestler you'll have an advantage over a BJJ guy in takedowns but you'll probably get choked by a BJJ guy pretty quick on the ground. Everyone in MMA today trains in wrestling and BJJ. Train in both!

  3. In MMA I would think that Brazilian JuJitsu is better because of the finishing moves. In a life situation it could be either. If wrestling has been good to you then it is a good thing. This comes up a lot in martial arts training. To me it is like people asking what religion is the best. Training helps to make and keep you healthy and gives you confidence that should be a large factor, unless you are just doing it for the sole purpose of being a fighter.  Even then you have wrestling competitions, judo, jujitsu, and so on that have their own competitions so you can test yourself in your choice of martial art. :)

  4. you wanna know why more people train in BJJ, perfect example is TUF season 1 Jos Kosheck VS. Chris Leban, Jos Koscheck took chrish down and sat there ontop of him for the entire fight. makes for boring fights that has less of a chance of getting noticed by a big promotion.

  5. I think the answer to this question is much like the question of which martial art is the most dominant. It really comes down to who is the better athlete, who wants to win more, training methods, ect. I wrestled for 15 years of my life and I'd like to say that wrestlers are the best, but I sure wouldn't want to roll with a BJJ expert. It seems like BJJ is the anti-wrestling as they make their money on doing moves that are considered too dangerous in wrestling.

  6. Wrestling is a lot more dominant in MMA than jiu-jitsu, i mean cmon, arm locks, neck lock and leg locks are not all jiu-jitsu either, cuz it seems like everyone thinks that any submission game is jiu-jitsu..

a good wrestler would dominate a good jiu-jitsu fighter on the ground, and jiu-jitsu fighters fight  on the ground, off their back, and thats exactly where a wrestler is tryin to put him

  7. It goes without saying that each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Also, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Are you asking what is more dominant in a style vs style match or in MMA?

In a style vs style match, it definitely goes to BJJ. Why? Because the wrestler has almost no way to win. While the wrestler will control the range and where the fight takes place, what can he do besides slam the BJJ guy real hard and hope that's enough? On the ground, the wrestler will get swept or submitted and that's pretty much that.

In the context of MMA, both skills are important. Wrestling, however, has more applications. With BJJ, your only way of winning a match is by taking the fight to the ground and submitting or TKOing your opponent. Its only application is on the ground.

With superior wrestling, you can take an opponent down and pound them out. However, you are not limited to that. You can also elect to keep the fight standing, if you feel that you can outstrike your opponent. Furthermore, as a wrestler, you'll be better than a pure BJJ guy at scoring takedowns, which makes you a more fearsome opponent than a BJJ guy against a pure striker. The better wrestler controls where the fight takes place, which is a major advantage in MMA.

Another thing to consider is that, in MMA, everybody has some wrestling, some striking, and some jiujitsu. With just enough submission defense, a wrestler can takedown a BJJ guy, defend against submissions, and pound him out. Or, if nothing else, he could win a lay and pray decision. This happens all the time.

Oh, and also, wrestlers tend to have fantastic conditioning.

So all in all, wrestling affords you more opportunities and options in MMA, but JiuJitsu is (obviously) better on the ground and would win/has won in style vs style bouts consistently.

  8. Oh,  BJJ Rocks Wrestling!  I know what I like and BJJ dominates that ring.

  9. In cage fighting wrestling and bjj go hand and hand almost every mma fighter has been in wrestling in school, the bjj gives them just another weapon to use with the one they always had.

  10. they have to different goals thats why u cant compare the two head to head, in wrestling its about take downs, control and exposing ur enemies back , and then going for the pin this is true for folk, greco roman or freestyle wrestling, where each one has specific ways u can score more points, however bjj is about submitting the other guy, u cant lose if u get stuck on ur back u only lose by submission, or points if ur in a match, in todays mma, no body does just either wrestling or bjj, u take the best from both, wrestling give u better take down deffense, and throws, while bjj gives u submissions
