and does that increase or decrease the value of the diamond? For example you have a 1 carat brillant round white diamond, and the same 1 carat, same C,C, and C that is blue, which is worth more?

  1. Color is due to impurities during crystallization of the carbon. Obviously the less impurities the whiter and more valuable. In the rare occasion that a single mineral is introduced during the crystallization then the diamond colors. Some colors are rare and therefore more valuable. Such as blue. The purity of the colors and quality are still a big issue. If you have a 1C white diamond and a 1C blue diamond of equal quality and cut the blue diamond would be worth far more.

  2. Diamonds can be naturally blue, or they can be irradiated to be blue (or other colors).

A natural blue diamond, of equal cut quality, clarity and carat weigt, is worth quite a bit more then a colorless stone.

An irradiated blue diamond, of equal cut quality, clarity and carat weight is worth quite a bit less.

  3. Colors in diamonds are a result of impurities in the gem.

The blue hue is usually a result of trace amounts of boron in the stone's carbon crystal structure. It is not added but occurs naturally.

Colors can add or detract from a diamond’s value. In October 2007 a blue diamond fetched nearly $8 million.
