  1. I have a Blue Front and she is not nippy. I love her, she is so full of personality. She picks up words and sounds very quickly. Unless where ever you are getting your bird from does DNA before you purchase it, you aren't going to know the whether it's a male or female until after you get it. In general, males are known to be better talkers, but my female talks more than some males I've seen. Always remember that not all birds will talk. It sounds like you have been doing research, but just know that Amazons have very strong personalities. They are amazing birds though, worth every penny. I haven't owned a DYH, so I can't really say too much about them. I would absolutely recommend a Blue Front.

Have you ever owned any birds before? I would strongly advise against getting an Amazon if you have never owned any birds.

Feel free to email with any questions about Blue Fronts.

  2. my blue front has never biten anyone and he is 4 so it real depends on the bird but if you want a blue front then find some breeders vist the bird many times before you buy it to make sure it is the one you want thats what we did with ours and he has been a baby from the day we saw him and so you cant go on what people say it depends on the bird and how he/she was raised and if you do this you will be sure to get the perfect bird

  3. If I were going to get a Parrot and had to choose, I would take a Blue Fronted Amazon over a Dbl Yellow Head or  Yellow Nape. Simply because they are more mellow and not as hormonal during breeding season.

  4. yellow or doubleyellow headed arerather nippy at breding season(spring) but its how you treat and train them wile they grow up a coockatoo must have to learn to play by themselves or while your gon they may turn to self mutalation or verry needy so studdy up on all of them befor you make your decition it is very important

  5. An amazon can be a difficult bird especially during breeding season. If you are not an experienced  bird owner dont consider one for your first bird. If you must have one get it from a breeder who hand feeds and socializes his birds or re home a very sweet one.---Yogi

  6. A bare eyed cockatoo could be a better choice if you want a snuggly bird that won't be as nippy. All birds, even the best, nip once in a while.

  7. Many of the answers below are opinion-based and not factual. I have three Amazons: an Orange-winged, a Double Yellow, and a Red Lored. Amazons do not reach sexual maturity often until they are 8 or 9 years old. You will not know until then how your bird will act at that point. If you google this, Blue Fronts have a tendancy to be part of a "trio" of birds who are typically very aggressive during puberty. However, my birds (both male and female) were not at all overly aggressive. As stated before me though, ANY bird can and WILL bite. It's how you train them that keeps them from continuing that behavior.

If you've never had birds before, or are accustomed to smaller birds, I would consider a cockatoo (although loud) because they can be more predictable during mating season and when they reach puberty.

The other thing that you don't want to rely on is the statement that males talk better than females. I have 1 male and 2 females and they all talk exceptionally and have their own distinctive personalities.

Good luck! If you can, get a bird from a shelter or a rescue. They need good homes and usually come ready to step up and get some cuddle time! :)
