BMW 528i AM Radio Reception Problem

AM reception extremely poor, (FM OK) would a motor drive ariel help ? instead of the embedded ariel in the rear window ?

If I replace the whole radio using an adapter plate to fill in the large hole , can I still use the original speakers ?
