BMW Car Question; Help Please

I am buying a new car (used) car so that I can finish my School without having a big car note stressing me out...I have found a couple of BMW's for about $3500 mostly with around 140-185K miles. My questions are

1. Is that 2 cheap for a BMW, does it more than likely have some problems

2. Is basic preventive maintenance VERY EXPENSIVE for a BMW (tune-ups, oil changes, brake fluid & trans. fluid changes)

3. How many miles does a BMW Generally drive before having Major Problems

Whatever Car I get I need it to run without any MAJOR repairs for atleast 1 year and 1/2 -2 1/2 years. Not really in need of any suggestions for cars Just want to know about the BMW. TY in advance.

  1. You are buying a car that is meant for well of people. Dosen't matter if its old or new, maintenance on a bmw is like major repairs on a civic. Its not by any means cheap. Especially if it has that many miles on it, it would be a nighmare for you. My advice is buy something thats good on gas, cheap on parts and you should be able to do some of the maintenance yourself. Actual mechanics are scared of working on bmw cars because of the stuff that goes into them. Wait till you are out of school, have a nice job and then buy a new one, and once you do, you will love it.

  2. You really really REALLY need to say what models and years the cars are..

  3. 1. You are in for problems if you pay that cheap for a BMW and if it has that many miles

    2. Normally that depends on the mechanic you go to. If you maintenance the car like that DO NOT go to a BMW dealership go to a private mechanic that'll do the job for half the price. For major repairs, on the other hand, your in for it..

    3. It really depends on the year.... my 91 735iL never had a problem and it ran for 252k miles. On the other hand, my current 97 740i got a major computer and transmission problem at 180k miles.

It seems too risky to get a BMW like this when you need a reliable car. If you can only spend $3500 I recommend you go newer and for an American or Japanese cars cause the repairs on those are wayyy cheaper and plus they're probably better on gas.

  4. No it is not cheap to maintain, and you shouldn't get a high milage BMW. If you buy a new BMW and properly maintain it, then they can go quite a distance, but used cars like these, forget it.

  5. The miles are too much and BMW repairs are pretty expensive.
