BMW Championship 2014 to be held at Cherry Hills Country Club – Golf news
Colorado course of the Cherry Hills Country Club will host the 2014 BMW Championship from 1 – 7 September.
The event was confirmed after the media obtained a copy of the email sent by the club to its members.
The mail said that the event, which has been taking place in Chicago, would move to Colorado for 2014. Colorado has been without a PGA Tour event since 2006, when The Internationals ended its contract with the state.
The mail also said that the 2011 event will be scheduled at Cog Hill while the next event in 2012 will take place at the Crooked Stick in Indianapolis. However, the venue for the 2013 event has not been decided yet.
Cherry Hills has been chosen by the PGA Tour owing to its finest caddie programs. Moreover, it has some of the hardest greens that pose a tough challenge for the players.
Despite that, the course has been a target of criticism, but Ed Mate, who is the executive director of the Colorado Golf Association, says otherwise.
Mate said that he was not surprised at the decision taken by the PGA Tour officials, as Cherry Hills deserved it.
He stated, “You can't build a golf course in Colorado long enough if enough means guys are going to be hitting lengthy shot into greens. People tend to look at a scorecard, but it is judging a book by its cover. You could build a 9,000-yard golf course,
but it would not be long enough if it were not strategically designed. Cherry Hills will be fine.”
Similar comments were shared by Tom Doak, who redesigned the course in 2008. He said that Cherry Hills was one of the best venues in the state and it was its superb layout that several tournaments had been staged over it.
BMW Championship is one of the flagship events on the Professional Golfers Association Tour. It is the third leg of the FedEx series, which takes place in September every season. The winner of the event proceeds into the Tour Championship, which is the last
play-off event to compete for the FedEx Cup.
