BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi: Garth Mulroy loses ground in the final round
Garth Mulroy, who stood at the top spot at the end of the third round of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi, looked disappointed when he saw the title slip out of his hands in the final round.
Mulroy came close to winning the BMW Italian Open, held at the Royal Park I Roveri, but tumbled to the second position after he conceded a woeful bogey on the 17th hole on Sunday.
Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, who fought his way through the first three rounds, knocked the South African off the top position, as he recorded a bogey-free eight-under par 64 in the final round.
Mulroy got off to a perfect start, as he recorded back-to-back birdies on the fourth and the fifth hole, to stretch the lead to two strokes.
Meanwhile, when Fernandez-Castaño was on fire and recorded six birdies between the 8th and the 14th hole, Mulroy also kept his nerves under control and remained in the share of the top spot.
Standing on the 17th tee, both the players were tied for the first position. However, at the end of the hole, Mulroy was one-stroke behind, as he conceded the second bogey of his round on the 17th hole.
Still, he had a chance of forcing the game to enter into the playoffs, with a birdie on the 18th hole. However, he failed and the South African took home the sixth European Tour title of his career.
At the end of the tournament, Mulroy said that he enjoyed the final round, especially the way he contended against one of the biggest names on the tour.
He admitted that Fernandez-Castaño played brilliantly on the greens and outshined his rivals on the course.
"I played well, but Gonzo's putter was a little hot for me today,” said Mulroy. “We were making birdie after birdie and it was fun. The 17th got me in the end there, but I'm happy and I played well”.
"He went through a seven hole stretch where he made six birdies. It forces the other player to make birdies too. The last two days have been very fun,” he added.
