Question:

BMW M3 alternative in BMW 5-Series

Hi,

Is there a competitive 5-Series model against the M3?. I know the performance will be lesser than the M3 although luxury will be better. But if performance can be compromised a bit, is there a 5-Series alternative at around the same price - Give or take a few thousand dollars.

  1. well the 550i has a much bigger engine. 4.8 litre V8 to be exact.  but the 535i has a turbocharged V6 which compares to the M3's 4.0 litre V8 so id go with the 535i. its just as good and a little more luxurious, the M3 is just a little sedan with a bigger engine basically... but if your looking at prices then the 535i is around 50,000 and the M3 is around 53,000. so its your choice!

  2. The 550i has a "much bigger engine" in terms of displacement (4.8 liters) compared to the current iteration of the M3's 4.0 liter engine.

But the 550i produces 360HP compared to 414HP in the M3.

It's fairly obvious which car would be faster in a 0-60MPH situation.

  3. It's like comparing apples to grapes.

The M cars are all out performance-oriented with special engines, suspension, exhaust, and brake systems.  The 5 series equivalent would be an M5.

In terms of cost, a 550i, or heavily-optioned 535i might sell for the same price as an M3.
