BMW Motorrad Italia rider James Toseland announces retirement after wrist injury – WSBK news
BMW Motorrad Italia rider James Toseland had confirmed his retirement from motorcycle racing world after suffering a severe irreparable injury to his wrist.
The British rider picked the injury at Motorland Aragon during a test session. After he was diagnosed with a broken wrist, he was sidelined for the three upcoming rounds at Donington, Assen and Monza.
Toseland said, “I wanted to write you a personal letter to explain the factors that have forced my early retirement and to take the opportunity to thank you for all of the amazing support you have given me throughout my career.”
Since his crash at Aragon in March, the British rider has been undergoing a tough time. His doctor has also advised to take permanent time off from racing. The damage occurred to the wrist is beyond rehabilitation.
However, he returned at the World Superbike Championship USA event in May 2011 and only participated in race one due to reviving pain in second race. He then skipped two more events due to injury problems and returned at the Brno event.
Toseland added, “At the time of first seeing my consultant, he warned that the damage to my wrist could be career-threatening, but we both committed to doing everything we could to ensure that I could continue racing.”
Referring to his comeback at Brno and then in the following Silverstone race, he had a hard time during the heat. Coming to the German WSBK round at Nurburgring, he again had a fall which directed him back to his consultant.
His visit the orthopaedic surgeon confirmed that he will not be racing any time soon in the future. The 30-year-old rider was extremely disappointed to know the fact about his injury.
The obnoxious injury has restricted his wrist movement which is essential for bike riding. Toseland also explained that any type of physiotherapy cannot help in reviving the movement. Eventually the problem ended the racing career for the former MotoGP racer.
