Donald played the rest of the front level-par and made the turn to a more aggressive back nine. With a bogey on the 11th, the Englishman pulled in a glistening eagle at par-five, 12th to challenge the field and was already seven-under
by that time.
He stumbled on another surprise bogey at par-four, 15th before carding two consecutive birdies towards the end to stay well in contention for the top slot over the weekend.
Known for his exceptional short game, Donald is not prone to bogeys in his perfect rounds in his career and despite of falling for three bogeys in the day, the Englishman insists that he is good with the greens on the treacherous Wentworth, recently tweaked
by Ernie Els.
He added, “I'm feeling very strong on the greens. I feel like something that has been not as consistent for me over the last couple of months, but felt very comfortable on the greens the last two days. Every time I've had opportunities, I'm seeing the line,
and got the speed down and making some good putts”.
Although the Englishman must be in search for the victory at the revered Wentworth club, a strong finish can now comfortably land him the world number one title he lost a few weeks back.
While McIlroy  has gone over to get some rest for the upcoming US Open where he would be defending his title, Donald is eager to utilise the opportunity to regain the top slot in his absence.
Although Donald insists he is keen to win the title than to regain the world number one spot on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
He added, “A situation like at THE PLAYERS where Rory had missed the cut and I had that opportunity. But to be honest, the focus is always to try and win the tournament”.
Another two raging players from the European Tour Alvaro Quiros and Peter Lawrie are in contention for the joint fourth, carrying on with their impressive work since the start of the event.
Lawrie, who shared the overnight lead heading in the second round, fell for a not-so-impressive day at the sprawling Wentworth, carding a meagre one-under, 71.
With two birdies on the front, Lawrie was hoping to bag holes on the back nine but fell for two late bogeys to lose the momentum and carded just one birdie on the 17th.
Meanwhile, Quiros who surged to the second spot yesterday after a strong five-under, 67, also fell for late bogeys on the front nine. He had to settle down for a sloppy two-under, 70.
