BMX star Dane Searls goes in coma after misjudged balcony dive at a nightclub
Professional BMX star Dane Searls is in a coma after sustaining critical head and back injuries during a non-BMX accident at Billy’s Beach House in Surfers Paradise, Australia, on Sunday night, November 20.
The 23-year-old Australian attempted jump into the pool from the first floor balcony of Billy’s Beach House. However, he misjudged the jump and hurtled straight into the cement instead, head first. The strong impact gave him severe head and back injuries,
sending him into a coma.
He was rushed off to the Gold Coast Hospital and put into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for immediate medical attention. He still remains in a coma, engaged in a battle for his life.
Searls’ friend and family rushed to the hospital as soon as they got the news of his accident at the night club. Also present at his bed-side during the night was Paul Everest, the director of the BMX dirt rider’s sponsor company Unit Clothing.
Returning home from the hospital the next morning, Everest gave updates on Searls’ condition. According to him, ‘‘He is in intensive care, gravely ill, fighting for his life. He comes from a strong family, some of the nicest people you will ever meet. He’s
obviously been hurt riding BMX but it is such a shame an accident like this has occurred in a nightclub.”
The team manger of Unit Clothing, Ryan Guettler, made an appeal to his Twitter followers to remember the BMX dirt rider in their prayers to help him come out of the coma.
Searls was partying at Billy’s Beach House to celebrate the milestone that he had accomplished on Friday. Putting his life on the line, the BMX dirt rider had set a world record by successfully jumping four gaps ranging from 9 metres to 18 metres that were
built specially for him at Boonah. The final gap featured the biggest jump to have been made successfully in BMX history.
The 23-year-old Searls gained popularity and recognition through the ‘Giants of Dirty’ project, created with the help of Unit Clothing last year. The video received massive hits on YouTube and made the BMX dirt rider into a promising star.
We will keep you updated with the latest news of Searls’ condition.
