...is the latest a person can start boxing and win a title, for example, if i started at the age of 20* would i still be able to win a heavy weight title and has there been any champions in recorded history to have done so at such a late stage in boxing.

???

i am extremely curious i have done reasearch and cannot find a boxer in the history books who has started at a late age, all of them have started at ages, e.g. 10,11,12,13 etc..

  1. Well Bernard Hopkins started at age 23 and became the middle weight with the most succesful amout of defenses

so he will be in the hall of fame, and has beaten many top p4p fighters

But he had boxed at a younger age on and off just for a bit tho

still gos to show you with enought enough skill you can do about anything

  2. Rocky Marciano started to box pro at 24 and had only boxed seriously as an amateur for a short time before this, maybe since he was 22 or 23.

  3. you always have the advantage when you start at a young age. b/c you will have more experience. nobody that boxes starts with the idea that they are gonna be a world title holder. you start at whatever age that you start at and you do your best. perhaps you won't become the world champion. but there can only be one of those at a time so don't sweat it. if boxing is something you want to do then just get to a boxing gym and start training.

  4. Though fighters can start late and have decent careers, it is extremely difficult because of all the fine tuning and actual experiance that comes with starting at an early age. There are a few late bloomers that had successful careers. I do believe Ron Lyle was a late starter, and fought Muhammad Ali for the title, but I am not 100% sure of his age when he started fighting. Ed "Too Tall" Jones(a world class athlete from the NFL), switched sports to become a boxer and was unsuccessful. Proving that it isn't how great of an athlete you are,but how much experiance you have in the sport.

Not to discourage you ,though, Greg Haugen was a two time lightweight champion, and he did start rather late.

Find a really good trainer, listen to him,and don't be to anxious to move your career too fast, and it is possible.Especially with boxers having longer careers these days.Good luck.

  5. With the state of the current Heavyweight division, id say you got a pretty good shot.

Ray Mercer had his first pro fight at 20,Hasim Rachman was 22 when he turned pro,David Tua was 20, Joe Mesi was like 25, Shannon Briggs was 21... But as you can see the guys listed where big strong guys and didnt stay at the top that long, but the heavyweight division is so weak that a tough 30 year old could turn pro and beat one of the current heavyweights.

Watch out for Rico Rodriguez, you will be hearing his name alot shortly.
