Hi. I want to get a job but I don't have a collage education. I came up with this great job, " BP Alternative Fuels Production Manager" This job would have a person looking at ways to boost the production of alternative fuels. When I went to BP and Shell Website, they already had a list of jobs that I know I could not do. All the oil companies want a worker to have a collage degree. So how could I get this job created?

  1. Simple. You need to get the college degree.

Getting a degree is proof you can do tough work and put in the required effort without giving up. It is not only about learning stuff. In fact it is 99% about showing that you can commit to something tough and see it through to the end. Only 1% of it is what you learn. Take it from me, if you cannot get a college degree you are unlikely to succeed in any big company.

  2. I agree with the poster above.  In today's corporation a college degree gets you in the door at a good company but that is also not enough at times since most jobs have several people going after them and unfortunately sometimes they weed out the candidates first based on education alone.  I know there are tons of people out there without degrees that are successful but those days are becoming rarer.  If you happen to have industry experience that may help you as well.  My advice is to get the degree and invest in yourself, if it's not an option due to your financial situation then find a company that will help you pay for your education.  Also get a degree that is going to be marketable and not one that was a waste of your time because some degrees are not as attractive as others.  Lastly, it depends on the place you go and if you learn anything or not.  I have a hard time believing people inherently come into college knowing statistics, accounting and finance or other quantitative courses.

  3. Simple.  You spend 10 years convincing someone that they should create this job for someone with no training, or spend 6 years and get a Masters degree, and just go get and job.
