  1. No warranty, four years old... time for an upgrade. They have the lite in blue now.

The lite seriously has a much nicer feel to hold than the original and a better backlit screen. It's worth it, especially if the old one doesn't work at all.

  2. Ugh. I disagree that the lite is better. It feels all rough and dry, and the buttons are placed awkwardly. I still have my old DS too, the promotional one that came with Mario Kart DS. (Meaning, the red one. =) )

Anyway, I don't know what you mean by 'gone to nintendo.com'. Did you call customer service, or just look around for an answer? Call them; they have a special line for game systems that need to be repaired. (Or something like that; I can't remember exactly, but me and my friend called in because her Gamecube wouldn't recognize game discs anymore.) They'll probably ask you to either A) send it in the mail and they'll send you back a new one (if you have the warranty), or B) tell there's nothing they can do, appologize, and suggest you buy a new one.

You could also try finding someone online who specializes in fixing this kind of thing. Send your DS in the mail, pay them whatever fee they require, and have them repair the DS for you. (Aside from the money you give them, you have absolutely nothing to lose if the DS is broken anyways.)

Here, I found this article saying that Nintendo fixes broken DS Lite hinges for free. I doubt that they'd fix an old DS, but you could ask.

Here's also a Youtube vid of someone whose DS Lite hinge broke off as well. She said she has to send it in and they'll repair it. Still, it's not the old DS. I dunno if your screwed or not.

And here's an example of someone who has offered to repair broken DS'.
