  1. BT will say that the line is capable of up to 5MB, the lines are constantly monitored and the user speed "profile" may be lowered if lots of errors are detected on the line, this may be due local electrical equipment poorly fitted internal extension lines etc, I read somewhere that one case the speed dropped to 0.5MB due to a nearby fluorescent light causing interference. To check your current IP profile, go to , test.speedtester.bt.com you'll need your phone number and ISP login details. The figure you want is the bRAS profile. You can than ask your ISP to report a stuck bRAS profile to BT Wholesale

  2. Yes, could be contention, could also be line quality. Ours here has suffered during the "summer" weather so I can only get 0.5MB at present and several of the neighbours are even slower. Apparantly it's not a high priority with BT as long as voice works, which it does . . .

ISPs always say "UP TO xyzMB" they never guarantee it.

  3. NO...whenever you subscribe for broadband service you dont give you the total or over all bandwidth they have mentioned in the plan.total download speed available will be just (ur plan speed)/8=(ur dwnload speed)..

so now you can calculate it it says 5mb than it will give u:

    5*1024=5120 (converting 5mb to kb)

5120/8=640kb (this is your actual download speed..)

so in a plan of 5mb/s you will get a download speed of only 640kb/s...ok so now is ur question solved

  4. Bt are c**p that always happend to my all the time, and sometimes my internet atually cut right off, even for the weekend etc. I switched to virgin media, its more reliable, faster and you dont get the grief of adsl broadband.

  5. Hi

If you get TV through BT vision, some of your download capacity is used for that, so you might lose something between 1 and 2Mb of speed.  Also, BT guarantees UP TO 5Mb, not a minimum of 5Mb, and you are competing with up to may 20 other people on the same local loop.  Ask BT what the contention ratio is on your line.
