Hello, I’m having so much trouble with my BT phone at home, My broadband is working fine so I’m thinking why don’t I just use a skype hub phone and forget about my BT phone…? I know I need the BT line for my broadband but using skype would be cheaper for calling NZ & Ireland? Can anyone help with this please?

Thanks

Tom

  1. HI Tom,

I just changed from the virgin broadband and phone package to the BT home hub with Internet phone.

I had so much trouble with my broadband connection with virgin, spent about a week trying to get the problem sorted. At times I was connected at just 464kps, eventually one of their teck guys said that they were having problems and they did not know when they would be sorted out, this was after id spent £50 on a new modem as well as the one they gave me initially didn't work at all.

The BT Internet phone is really crystal clear but does get an echo on times, the speaker phone on the handset is very useful as its loud enough for you to hear and is picked up on the other side again crystal clear.

As for calling abroad I would have to say that skype would be your cheapest option, I have tried skype just for curiosity and it has a very good clear line.

Have you given msn or yahoo any thought, you could chat and have a video feed to your friends/family abroad. Ive used it a couple of times on Xmas day, so much nicer than hearing someones voice.

  2. I dont touch anything with BT's name on it even with a long stick.

I have been with Virgin Media for so long now and their broadband is seperate so you aren't relying on a phone line. If you get Virgin Media and get BT turned off then you can go choose whatever phone provider you want and get the one with the cheapest calls or you could just use skype through your broadband.

  3. one thing to consider is that depending on which broadband package you go on you actually get the BT home hub and the home hub phone (the voip phone) for free.

ive had mine since they were released and when calling someone on another home hub phone the quality is awesome, it really does sound like thier next to you, not the normal slight distortion on a normal landline so i would recommend the hub phone 100%
