My bf and i have just moved into a council owned flat. There is a BT point but when we phoned up BT to connect this they said it was no longer connected to the exchange. After my bf goin through all the hassle of setting up his account, we were then told it would cost £124.99 to reconnect & because of poor credit would have to pay £50.00 deposit. We paid the deposit and was told an engineer would come out & arranged a date. We recieved a letter with welcome pack and run through of our agreement few days later. My bf then took day off 2 wait for the engineer who was meant to come between 1pm - 6pm. Surprise..no engineer appeared and my bf lost out on 1 days wages as in trades. When he phoned BT to complain the advisor said that our line had been cancelled but could not tell us why and would have to go through the hassle of setting up the line again. We are still waiting for deposit to be returned. Is this acceptable?

  1. If you have been given your new 'phone number by BT, ring their faults dept (151) and report it as a fault, (ie. you have got no dial tone)  This NOT the correct way of doing it BUT IT WILL GET A RESULT !!!!

They will tell you about charges etc but as long as you've checked in your master socket and you still have no dial tone, just accept what they say and ask for an engineer to visit.

I am an BT Openreach engineer and we maintain the landlines for ALL the Service Providers.

    Good luck.

  2. The above notes are incorrect, BT do not control all the landlines (Orange, carphone warehouse, post office, etc) and Ofcom will not deal until BT have investigated completely. Please call back, explain what has happened and ask for a supervisor, ensure you get all full names of who you speak to and keep pushing until you and your BF are happy with the resolution.

  3. OFCOM

  4. This sounds like typical BT, unfortunately you can do nothing about it, as BT controls all the land lines.

It certainly is not acceptable and you should continue to keep calling BT, and you might think about getting in touch with the regulator Ofcom.
