  1. Your speeds will vary and go up and down. My worst speeds have been just over 3mb and at best just over 6mb. Don't forget that you share your connection with maybe another 30-100 people. It just depends how many people are sharing the connection with you. Your profile will adjust from time to time and that's normal.

  2. Perhaps this might answer your question:

  3. BT haven't necessarily changed anything. Your connection speed will be affected by the contention ratio of the link you are connected to at the exchange. the contention ratio is "how many people:1 link". The lower the contention, the better the connection.

You have probably run your test during a peak time. Never base a test on 1 result. Run a few random tests throughout the day/night and see what the overall is. You may even notice a trend in when the line would typically drop speed.

Also, if there are works occurring on the lines, this may have a knock-on effect to your speed.

  4. in future do your test here

then just give us the link to your results here is mine i just done.

    so you can compare..

  5. Internet speeds are not set in stone. Think of it like the roads network, one day you can get to work in half the time, and other days it takes you hours.

Internet speeds are the same, they vary. Get used to it.

  6. A big factor is when you do the test. Do it a 7 pm and then do it a 3 am and see the difference. Also don't forget the kids are on holiday now where upon they would be at school.

  7. Continue to use http://speedtester.bt.com as this is the one that BT will get you to use when you call them. By all means compare it with http://speedtest.net as I do.

BT is probably the worst in the country now for throttling bandwidth and they are not very helpful in resolving the matter.

My advice to you [if you have seen noticable reductions in speed] is to give them a call and ask them to remove the restrictions [even though they will tell you that there are none] and threaten to leave them if they don't. They are in breach of their end of the contract and you are well within your rights to leave a contact without penalty because of this. Tell them this and you'll be amazed at how responsive they will be if you know what you're talking about.

Personally I'd change ISP's. If you do this be sure to ask them what their policy is regarding bandwidth choking/throttling.
