I'm moving into a new flat and I've contacted BT to arrange activation of the landline. BT have put me on their Weekends & Evenings 12 month contract package - can I go with another provider for just the calls if I continue to pay BT the line rental, with no cancellation charges? Or should I move to the Weekends only package before my cooling off period runs out?

  1. The best thing that we did was to phone BT and ask them which tariff would it be best for us to use looking at our call pattern over the past 6 months we were surprised how helpful they were and our telephone bill has reduced.

  2. I had a call from them the other night telling me that as I was receiving free weekend calls as a standard BT customer, I could have evenings free as well if I agreed to commit to BT for 12 months.  I told the person I couldn't guarantee that so I wasn't signed up.

I used to work for a telephone company that would take over your calls but you still kept your BT line (a carrier pre-select service) and I saw many cases where BT stopped customers switching over to our service - the reason was the customer agreed to commit to BT for three or 12 months... I think you may be stuck with them.

  3. You will be stuck with BT for your contract period , if you decide to move BT will still charge you for the full contract price.

But you should be able to switch tariffs, especially if you have not started to use the service.

I left BT years ago to a very much better provider who make it very clear exactly what the tariffs are, and will suggest the best for you, and that will not necessarily be the most profitable for the company.

  4. I read in the Times yesterday that a lot of people ( me included) have been put on the weekend and evenings package but in the small print it has put up the line rental and some calls have jumped from 4,5p/hour to 96p/hour,,they even admitted they had done this to rake in more money,,If however you have entered into  a contract you may find yourself stuck with it unless they havn`t started the work yet in which case you could opt out of them,,just give tham a call and ask,,

  5. You can add another provider. But you can't ever cancel a contract.
