Question:

BT install charge question?

we already have a BT line and broadband, (within B/b contract, not Tel) and moving house to a property that requires a line install. (although there are already BT ports there, apparently not active) BT want to charge £125 for a line install. Is there a way out of this? doesnt seem fair in the slightest, and cant get out of it due to being within the broadband contract. Anyone know of a legal reason we dont have to pay for this? Or any way out of paying? Not our fault its non serviceable property. :(

  1. Yes, as above: Prior to Ofcom sticking their oar in, BT would previously reconnect the line for £10, or free if it was being changed over on the same day.

Just phone Ofcom & thank them for forcing BT to rob you of £115.

  2. BT and all other service providers have to pay Openreach to install the lines for them. Some providers may pass this charge onto you, some do it by having higher call charges and some have upto a two year contract.

Either way you have to pay, I think at the moment there is a discount if all the wiring exists and no extra engineering works are required.

These charges are set by the regulator OFCOM and there is scope for the Comms providers to have some leaway but not much.

If you have any problems with this complain to OFCOM as they may be able to help, but please remember they are the ones that have set these rules and charges up. Since before they meddled this service was FREE!

If you require any more info please add and I'll come back to you.
