BWAA’s Rookie of the Year Award: Reds’ Frazier faces tough competition – MLB News
The Baseball Writers Association of America will announce the result of American League and National League Rookies of the Year Awards on Monday, November 12.
The event which will be broadcast live on Monday, starting at 6 pm ET, will see three finalists from both leagues.
Top 3 players vying for the award in the American League are White's Yoneis Cespedes, Rangers' Yu Darvish and Angeles' Mike Trout.
From the National League, it is Reds' Todd Frazier, Nationals' Bryce Harper and Diamondbacks' Wade Miley who are competing for Rookie of the Year Award.
Harper is considered to be the favourite in the National League. He was the first youngest position player to be picked up for the All-Star team. On the other hand, Miley made a breakthrough to relative stardom in June when he ended the month with 9-3 record, having had 2.19 ERA.
However, the Reds’ Frazier makes for a candidate to reckon with. His arrival in the Major League Baseball was significant, albeit slow. He was to replace the likes of Scott Rolen and Joey Votto in the team when they were out of the line-up.
Since being drafted in 2007, he has gradually made an ascent – not attracting much limelight. In the Triple-A Level where he represented his team in 246 games, hitting .261 with 35 homers and 128 RBIs.
That brought him to the Major League. Frazier has maintained the consistency even though he did not get a regular chance when he was promoted to the Majors. To be a substitute for the senior players in their absence due to injuries, Frazier proved a “handyman”.
That is what actually helped the player. Being fifth in the Reds’ rank in representing the club in most games (128) and having 422 at-bats, he led the Reds with six triples.
It is his consistency in almost all the positions where he was placed in and the offensive prowess, that singled him out while nominees were being named. That will be officially acknowledged on Monday if he wins the award.
