BWF Super Series Finals: Sung Ji Hyun crushes Juliane Schenk in Women’s Singles Group A showdown
Korea’s in-form shuttler, Sung Ji Hyun, has stamped her superiority over Germany’s Juliane Schenk by beating her in Women’s Singles Group A showdown in the 2011 BWF Super Series Finals, on Thursday, December 15, in Liu Zhou, China.
The World Number Eight, Ji Hyun, toppled the higher ranked Schenk, who is currently placed at number seven in the Women’s Singles world standings. The Korean played to her full potential and stunned the German in straight games after working extra hard for 59 minutes. The German failed to get rid of the aggression of her Korean rival and lost the contest with a narrow margin.
The opening game was incredible when both shuttlers progressed closely in the whole set. However, it was the Korean who worked well in the ending points and took the set with a dramatic score. In the following game, the contest remained tough throughout the set and again it was the Korean who emerged as the winner with a narrow difference.
The German played remarkable badminton in the opening half of the first game and remained ahead of her Korean opponent, who was struggling to find a good flow. However, after the break, the German committed a few unforced errors which helped the Korean to level the score by reaching at 12-12.
From this stage onwards, both shuttlers remained equal by playing at the same speed and level. They employed every skill to dominate the rallies and build a good lead but no one could manage it until the score reached at the dramatic stage of 27-27.
At this breath-taking stage, the Korean put up wonderful show by playing aggressive strokes and won the set with a 29-27 score on the board.
In the following set of the match, both shuttlers played attacking badminton and targeted the loop poles of each other. The score progressed closely until 13-13 when the German manage a four-point lead by reaching at 17-13. The Korean changed his tactics and levelled the score at 18-18.
Ji Hyun played with wonderful anticipation at this stage and won the set with a 21-19 score on the board. The overall result of this straight-set fight was 29-27 and 21-19.
