BWF shelves idea of declaring skirt mandatory for women players – Badminton News
Badminton World Federation (BWF) came under severe criticism when they directed female shuttlers to wear skirts as now they have decided to take that notification back to avoid any trouble in the 2012 London Olympics.
The game is more popular in eastern regions then the west and BWF made this move to add some glamour like tennis just to attract more audience in tournaments.
However, female shuttlers from all over the world reacted severely as they wear a combination of shorts and skirts.
Women’s Singles expert Karina Jorgensen of Denmark stated that attire should not be the biggest problem for international body as this sport will grab more attentions only if standards of game get better.
She said, “It should be about what we do, not what we wear.”
Now the deputy president of BWF Paisan Rangsikitpho has declared that they cancelled this dress up strategy but he also made clear that international body wants male and female campaigners to wear appropriate dress.
He said, “We have shelved the move. We just want to encourage women and men players to dress properly. We want them to dress nicely, professionally.”
Moreover, Paisan also added that they expect shuttlers and sponsors to play their roles in making this game more popular across the globe.
He urged them to introduce and wear attractive outfits as better presentation means more feast for the eyes.
Meanwhile, BWF media and communication officer Jan Lin also echoed his views and stated that this step was taken just to engage viewers from all over the world which ultimately means more coverage.
She said, “The onus is on the BWF to get players ready and used to the camera and being in the public eye. TV and sponsors are drawn to stars and icons, looking good on court is one way to be noticed.”
Earlier, BWF also introduced new kit for umpires and technical staff to make them look more elegant and stylish.
Moreover they have also made an agreement with their sponsors to raise prize-money of different events, increase live coverage to publicise badminton stars just to reach maximum audience.
