BYU Independent Study, Spanish Exam?

So I'm taking a BYU 1st year Spanish course (people say it's bad cause you need to learn how to pronounce the words, but they come with CD's that help you along..) and I'm kind of concerned about my final exam..

Through out the whole course, they would always include words in a sentence or phrase that I didn't know (they never taught it). They would show me the translation, but there's always things like that where they just assume that we know something.

Any ways, to get to my question, has anyone ever taken this? And if so, was the final exam that way?

I'm not sure, but the best way to learn a language is by immersion, and taken classes taught by teachers (this sounded like a self-taugh/CD type thing)
