BYU’s Nelson out for rest of season
Brigham Young’s starting quarterback Riley Nelson has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury. Nelson injured his shoulder during Saturday’s game against Florida State. After the game an MRI was administered, which revealed that the youngster
would need season ending surgery.
Brigham Young had been struggling on offence this year, particularly in the passing game, where the team is now ranked 101st in the nation. The Cougars were using two quarterbacks as Nelson split time with freshman Jake Heaps.
Head coach Bronco Mendenhall was disappointed to hear about Nelson’s injury, saying. “We will miss Riley’s leadership, toughness and playmaking ability. Unfortunately, injuries are part of football. Riley is a great young man and we will look forward to
his return.”
The injury is a disappointing one for the junior, who spoke briefly about the ailment, stating. “It’s never fun to be injured. I’m getting it taken care of as soon as possible so I can start my recovery and be back to help the team in the future.”
With Nelson out for the remainder of the season the job to lead the Cougars offence will fall on first-year quarterback Heaps.
Heaps is a pocket passer with a strong arm, but has not been tested and could struggle as a youngster in a difficult system and on an offence that cannot seem to find its game. Brigham Young has averaged 4.56 yards per-attempt on offence this season, which
ranks as the worst in the country. If the Cougars are to turn it around Heaps will have to put in several inspired performances.
In three games this season Nelson managed 205 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Heaps has amassed 260 passing yards with one touchdown, but owns a QB rating of 88.56.
