Babak Rafati looking to bring life back to normal after attempting suicide - Bundesliga News
Having attempted suicide last week, German referee Babak Rafati has been diagnosed with depression as he returns to life after spending three days in intensive care. He also wanted to regain his lost FIFA-listed status once he is fit to supervise games in
the future.
Rafati was talking after being released from a local hospital where he spent three days in ICU.
The referee had attempted suicide last week when he was due to stand in the game between http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/1-FSV-Mainz-05-c38166 and FC Koln. He was found unconscious in his hotel’s bath tub in a pool of blood.
Two of his assistants entered his room after they failed to make contact with him despite their repeated attempts. Only upon entering the room did the two realised that the match could not go on as per the schedule, requesting the DFB officials to reschedule
the encounter.
Rafati was then immediately taken to a nearby hospital where his condition stabilised after hours of hard work from the doctors.
The DFB officials later credited Rafati’s two assistants for their quick thinking which is one big reason why the referee is alive and raring to go again. The DFB President, Theo Zwanziger, promised a reward for both of the assistants and regarded them ‘heroes’.
He also praised them for staying calm in such a panic situation.
Rafat's father recently revealed that the official was suffering from depression for the past few weeks which probably resulted in this disaster.
The lawyer also added, "Growing pressure for him to perform as a referee and the media pressure linked to that, combined with the constant fear of making mistakes, became a bigger and bigger burden. This burden, at some point, made everyday problems seem
insoluble and, in the end, he no longer felt able to cope with it."
The official immediately lost his FIFA-listed status after the incident but now vows to make a return to the football field.
Now it remains to be seen whether FIFA is generous enough to grant Rafati another opportunity following his suicide attempt.
