Babe Ruth: The greatest baseball player ever
The history of Baseball is incomplete without talking about the legendary Babe Ruth. Harry Frazee, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, was unaware of the fact that he is going to sell a legend to New York Yankees in 1919.
Harry Frazee the owner of Boston Red Sox was the unfortunate to sell Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919 to raise money for his production house. Yankees paid $125,000, the most salary ever in the history of baseball given to any player. Prior to trade
in 1919, the Red Sox had won five World Series and after the trade it took them 88 years to win their sixth World Series in 2004.
Ruth led the Yankees to seven pennants and four World Series titles. In 1927 he had a record 60 home-runs in a single season. He not only set records in salaries but also in scores. The best batting year in baseball history for Ruth was during the 1921 season.
Babe Ruth appeared in 152 games and had an ERA of .318 with 457 total bases and a slugging average of .699 which is still a record.
This legendary player was the first to cross 700 home-runs in their career. As Ruth retired in 1935, he had a total of 714 home-runs with an average of .342.
Babe Ruth was the first inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1998 The Sporting News ranked him Number one out of 100 greatest Baseball Players. According to one study conducted by Nye Lavalle’s Sports Marketing Group 97% Americans over the age of
12 identified Babe Ruth. In 1999 ESPN declared Babe Ruth third greatest athlete of 20th century.
Babe Ruth died at the age of 53 due to Pneumonia. At his death, the New York Times present tribute to the Babe “An unparalleled figure in American Sports history. Ruth was born with the ability to do amazing at the most impressive moments.”
"I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can." Babe Ruth not only proved his words but also set a pattern for all upcoming players in the game. "All I can tell them is pick a good one and sock it. I get
back to the dugout and they ask me what it was I hit and I tell them I don't know except it looked good."
Babe Ruth will forever be known as the greatest baseball player to have ever lived. He completely dominated in an era when America was looking for heroes. His tremendous abilities are unmatched to this day as nobody in the common era of baseball can even
come close to the success that he had during his illustrious career.
The legendary status of Babe Ruth and the destiny of Yankees are all a part of baseball’s great history and lore in American society. Every player wants to be like him, but none come close. If Harry Frazee had not sold him to the Yankees and Ruth remained
with the Red Sox destinies could have been different, but one thing that rings true is that wherever Babe Ruth would have ended up, he is the greatest baseball player to have ever lived.
