Question:

Babies and Jaundice?

Ok so I had my daughter on the 31st of July and was only 34 weeks pregnant when I had her. She was in one hospital where they deal with preemies and then a couple days later she was shipped to a different hospital that could better care for her. So she's been here eight days and she was diagnosed with jaundice. They have had her on photothearpy for about 5 days now but one day it will be gone and then the next it's severe, This has happened twice now.

Do you know anyone that has had a baby with jaundice or did your child ever have jaundice? If so how long did it take roughly to completely get rid of it? Having me breastfeed is it going to make it better or worse? She is also getting vitamin D daily

Thanks in advance

  1. I'm sorry!!  :(

My daughter was born at 36 weeks and her jaundice was moderate, though she didn't go to the hospital.  She was pretty orangey for a while, maybe 3 weeks?  Breastfeeding and sunlight really helped.

Keep breastfeeding; the majority of infant jaundice IS helped by that!!

Hope it gets better soon, praying for you!!

  2. My first baby born at 35 wks was in NICU for 8 days, 4 of those days with moderate jaundice. They kept her under the bililights and I could only get her for 1/2 hr at a time and it went away fairly quickly. My second baby born at 35 wks had high jaundice levels but they for some reason wanted her to get rid of it on her own so they just had me do sunlight therapy (putting her bassinet in the window) and it went away and came back and went away for like a month. I've heard breastfeeding makes it go away faster but i didnt breastfeed my first and did my second so I'm really not sure.

  3. My DD was born at 38 weeks with jaundice. My mom is a RN and so we did the every other day/every few days (can't remember now) blood work for about a week. It helped having her in a sunny window area with just a diaper on as suggested by someone else. Great advice. She also was a breastfed baby.  Hang in there! Don't take her outside in direct sunlight but let the window filter some of the ub rays and bump up the house temp while you are doing it. I think we did 15-20 several times a day so that she would get exposure but wouldn't get too cold. Good Luck and prayers said for a perfectly normal healthy baby! I hope this passes quickly for you both!

  4. I was jaundice and had to get photo therapy for 3 days straight. But I'm not exactly sure how long it took to go away.i know I had it for a couple weeks. She might  just be more severe because she's so preemie..Breast feeding will help her pass the meconium in her p**p quicker and will help get the billirubin level's down as well since breast milk is digested quicker than formula. I wish you luck and congrats on your new one!

  5. Jaundice is very common for newborn babies even those born fullterm some just have a more severe case of it than others.  My oldest son was born at 36 wks and was released with me but he had his levels rechecked at 5 days old and the billirubin levels were so high they had to order a wallaby blanket which is a phototherapy machine done at home where the blanket lights up and is wrapped around the waist to clean out all the toxins.  He had that for about 2 wks then his levels were finally normal.  I was so happy.  My second son was born at 36 wks but his jaundice was a mild case so I was just told to put him in his seat in just a diaper in front of a window with the sun coming in a few times a day and make sure he got plenty of fluids.  It took 2 wks but then he was fine.
