Babies and drinking milk?

I babysat my niece today and my sister informed me not to give her formula anymore only juice or water. I said so no milk at all and she said nope we decided not to give her formula or any other milk just juice and water because her breath stinks when she drinks milk. my niece is only 1 so that seemed to soon to me and my husband that she would not give her ANY milk at all.

Do you know if it is ok when they are 1 to stop giving them milk??

  1. Juice is REALLY bad for their teeth. From ages 1-2 they need the extra fat in Whole milk for brain development. Has she ever heard of brushing her daughter's teeth/gums? She needs to take her to the doctor and dentist.

  2. Uh.... that's pretty ignorant.

At 1 they can start having cow's milk and they NEED to have some sort of milk. She cannot only live on juice and water, she won't thrive. Tell your sister to brush her daughter's teeth if she thinks her breath stinks.

  3. No, milk is needed for everyone at every age. If her breath stinks that is because her teeth need to be brushed not because of milk. Decreasing diary intake will decrease the strength of her bones.

  4. At 1 you start giving cows milk or soy milk as they need the fat in the milk for proper brain development but I do know some that are allergic to both so they get their fat and stuff from other products.  Formula ends at 12 months.

  5. Yes it is ok for them to stop giving her milk.  They should at least give her a little soy or rice milk each day though.  The only thing humans need at this age from milk is fat and calcium.  We didn't give our son milk after he was a year old.  But I did breastfeed him until he was 1 months old.  He is 4 now and has soy milk on his cereal.  Cows milk is actually not good for anyone at any age at all.  My kids have no health problems from never drinking it.

  6. I think they don't need formula after a year, but cows milk gives them the fat they need, whole milk i believe.  also, juice i heard is bad for them, i tried giving my son some, but he just gags, lol.
