Question:

Baby Bearded Dragon - Not Eating His Crickies! =(?

My very young bearded dragon (only about a month old or so - 5 inches long) hasn't been eating his crickies! I have his sun lamp on for about 8 hours a day and his basking area reads on average about 103 degrees. I've been putting calcium powder on his crickies (while gut loading them too) like they tell me to and he gets plenty of fresh water everyday. I've noticed he has some very very tiny (as in the size of a pin head) patches of skin shedding off, but I'm not sure if that's enough to stop his feeding. I put about 16 crickies in his tank and that was 3-4 days ago and there's still about 10 left. He's eating them, but not as fast as I think he should be. Do babies start out slow and gain an appetite as they age? Am I doing something wrong or is Titan just not that hungry?

  1. first of all, DO NOT leave crix in his tank. they can eat him alive while hes sleeping.

second, his sun lamp should be on 12 hours a day.

thirdly, if hes eating them theres nothing to worry about.

  2. Only put the amount of crickets in the habitat that he can eat in a few minutes.  Keep the spares in a habitat of their own with food and water.

Your basking area is not warm enough.  It needs to get up to 110 degrees.

They grow about one inch in length per week.  Ours is 11 weeks old and 6 inches.  Make sure the crickets are smaller than the space between his eyes.

Do you have fresh veggies and pellets for him?  He needs to learn how to eat a variety of food.

  3. well when they shed they won't eat much for a few weeks so i think it's just because he's shedding.
