My son is 4 months old, and a friend of mine gave me 20 boxes of baby cereal. i check the expiration and it was from last year. They are all sealed in their orginal packing, should i throw them away? I heard products can last a year longer than their "expiration date"..its just the companys way of having you buy more of their items. i tried calling my doctor, but they are always "away" from their office. What should i do?

  1. I really don't know how to answer this. I would assume it would be fine but try to ask your doctor anyways be persistent to contact them.

  2. Call the company and ask them!  They will certainly advise you or might even replace it if you ask. They probably are just stale if its dry cereal.  If its mixed wet cereal then I would dispose of it, or give it to a local homeless shelter.  Its definitly not worth risking the health of your baby over a free meal.

  3. The expiration date is based on the freshness, and the maximum time that the most labile nutrients can survive.  It is most likely safe, but some nutrient loss would be expected

  4. The 8 oz baby cereal boxes from Gerber are like $1.50. It isn't a lot of money, so I would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to my baby.
