  1. At that age if you feel you need to give him solids he only needs a couple of spoonfuls. He still needs to have mostly milk. If you are bottle feeding and he is taking 8oz bottles at each feed switch to stage 2 milk. My daughter is also 4 months old and she is also unsettled. I also read a question yesterday from someone whose baby is 4 months old and is unsettled. It seems to me they must be having a growth spurt. I'd definitely go with the extra milk rather than extra solids. Are for dropping the night feed, I'd wait until he is a little bit more settled.

  2. NO ITS FINE, AS LONG AS YOU FEED HIM AS SOON AS HE WAKES UP, AND AS FOR THE FOOD ITS FINE NOTHIN WRONG IF YOU GIVE HIM A BIT MORE.. GROWIN BOY..

  3. Don't cut his night feed, he's still very young, and needs the nourishment.  Whether you are breastfeeding or formula feeding do this frequently, whenever your son is hungry, and that should be enough for your baby until he's 6 months, when babies usually start solids, but if he likes starting on solids now, then I say let him eat those too!  As far as sleeping, babies like to get into a sleeping pattern long enough for you to get used to it, and then they change it on you!  Trust me, my Son changed his sleeping patterns all the time, you just have to go with the flow, and know that your baby is going to be just fine :0)

P.s  I agree with Katie's answer, but a little solid food won't hurt if he likes it.  Just maybe not that much.  Milk, milk, milk or formula, formula, formula!  That's what he needs, but figure out what he likes and go with the flow.  All kids are different.

  4. The current advice is to not give solids until 6 months and a 110 g jar sounds like a huge amount for a baby his age. It could well be this that is disturbing his sleep as he is struggling to digest it as his digestive system is too immature to cope. If anything i would reduce the amount of solids you are feeding him and give more milk, which is easier for him to digest and should form the main part of his calorific intake till he is a year old.

Edit: A growth spurt around 4 months is pretty usual too and often means more night feeds, and I have found with my son that anytime he has been learning a new skill (like sitting up, crawling and stuff like that) his sleep has been disturbed for a while. Night waking is just something that most babies do unfortunately.

Your midwife may well have said that but midwifes are quite often basing their opinions on very outdated thinking and the size/weight of a baby has absolutely no bearing on when they should be given solids. They should get solids when they are developmentally ready for them (have lost tongue trust reflex, can sit unaided etc) which for most babies is around 6 months.
