Question:

Baby Guinea pig with a fused eye?

Our Guinea Pig had a litter of babies last Wednesday. One of the babies had one cloudy blue eye when it was born. After a couple of days a yellow cyst appeared on the cloudy eye. I was cleaning it with salty water and this morning I noticed that the eye was fused shut. We live in an area where we only have access to a visiting vet clinic once a month. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to help?

  1. clean the wound then put a bit of ice on it.can u open the eye to see if there is a infection.also r u shure there isnt a emergency vet that visits.if there is call em and tell them about ur guinea pig.

  2. I think you should leave the guinea pigs eye alone. You do not know how much pain the piggy is in - and maybe the eye has become fused shut and is repairing itself.

I know it is a plain suggestion - but it is what i would do.

and another thing - do not let your piggies breed again, please! there are already so many homeless piggies in the world.. it makes me so sad.

  3. Its probably an eye infection, which is contagous. You need to take it to the vet ASAP!

  4. I really hope you aren't breeding any animals without acess to a vet! Not to mention that breeding guinea pigs is especially dangerous both for babies and mom pig.

But I will assume this was an "accidental" breeding...

You need to find a way to get to the vet. There is no other option. Otherwise the baby will die. Infection is already likely setting in. Without proper, professional treatment the baby will die.

Addition: I absolutely DO know what I am talking about. Guinea pigs are overrunning shelters and being put to sleep in record numbers every day because of backyard breeders. Do your research. Over 20% of sows die giving birth. No animal lover would take that risk. Adopt! There are thousands of guinea pigs needing a home. http://www.guinealynx.info/breeding.html

A cloudy eye and a yellowed cyst are completely different situations. Bacteria can and probably have entered the cyst and caused infection, i.e. - the yellow color. If nothing else, this is a case of entroption and needs to be treated by a cavy savvy vet. http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html

  5. MemphisGal has absolutely no clue what she's talking about!  If breeding guinea pigs is so dangerous for the sow and babies, why hasn't the species died out?  Your baby cavy isn't going to die and "professional help" would probably be a waste of time and money as very few vets really know anything about treating cavies.  After literally hundreds of litters I've successfully treated cloudy eyes many, many times and not one pig has needed a vet.

First, get some vitamin A gel capsules from the vitamin aisle in the supermarket or drugstore.  Keep rinsing with the mild saline solution.  As the crustiness softens, very gently separate the eyelids.  Pierce the gel cap with a pin and squeeze the liquid contents into the eye.  Don't worry if some of it ends up on baby's fur or the floor or you; as long as some of it gets IN the eye it will help.  Clean the eye a few times a day and apply the vitamin A once each day after cleaning.  In 3 - 4 days time baby's eye will be fine.  Watch this baby's other eye and the littermates for signs of the same condition so you can begin treatment early.

I breed and show Teddy cavies.  Newborn Teddies' eyes often become irritated by their short, curly fur or the shavings that sometimes get caught in mom's coat.  As I said, hundreds of litters, many cases of "cloudy eye," all recovered handily and none needed a vet.  Good luck!
