Question:

Baby Jake's Cradle-cap Crisis

My son is 3 months. He had cradle cap and I used baby oil like every mother I know and my ped. recommended. I've rubbed it, I've brushed it. It was almost gone. Now it seems there's small patches of it coming back. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch

  1. Try Eucerin products.    What cradle cap is- is atopic dermatitis.   Tends to happen in families were allergies abound.

  2. Sometimes the baby oil doesn't help.

Buy some organic Oatmeal baby Shampoo and get a really soft tooth brush.

Every time you bath him, brush his head with the tooth brush and the oatmeal shampoo, doing very small circles, starting in the front of the head, until you cover the whole head.

    It should clear soon.

  3. My Italian mom told me to use warmed olive oil for cradle cap on all 5 of my kids.. It's natural, won't burn eyes in case of accidental drip, and has no artificial scents that might irritate skin further. Worked every time!

  4. My pediatrician suggested Head and Shoulders shampoo. We used it on our breast fed daughter every night for about a month and it worked. We tried one of the new scented ones, but we didn't like it, though I don't remember why. (Until I found the scented ones on sale with a coupon for my husband, we used his classic. Fortunately, I had a sample bottle that we used on her. The conditioner made her full head of hair look pretty.)

  5. i used cradle cap care from walmart (blueish green bottle the pooh bear on it)..rubbed it on waited a couple of minutes and brushed it away with an infant brush..it has never come back and i only did it once

  6. My daughter had cradle c**p (hehe) and STILL has it now, at 19 months.

I did everything, baby oil, specific treatment for cradle cap, even some head and shoulders shampoo.  Most did nothing but make her hair greasy- treatment isn't so easy to treat on babies with hair- I let it be.  I can't see it unless the day is really bright, it doesn't bother her and she will eventually grow out of it.

It actually makes me more ashamed to go out with an oily haired baby than I am to go in public with one with cradle cap.

I didn't help at all, except to say if you can't get it to clear up, it isn't the end of the world.

  7. when my son had it I used the Johnsons baby shampoo with vitamins.. it is an orange-pinkish color.. it worked like a charm!

  8. I love California baby Calendula cream.  Target carries it.  Its wonderful on everything :)  minor cuts and cradle cap. Good luck

  9. Some babies, in the very first few months of life, may experience a general scaliness and redness around the scalp area. The scales may be oily and yellow in color. It may also appear as red or slightly pinkish crusted patches. This condition is known as "cradle cap" and is pretty common in brand new babies.

If the redness and scaliness also occurs on the baby's face, behind the ears, on the forehead or eyebrows and/or in the diaper area, the condition is labeled as seborrheic dermatitis. For most babies, cradle cap will heal by itself within a few months without any special treatments. Most experts believe that cradle cap does not cause any itching or discomfort to a baby.

Cradle cap can usually be helped by shampooing the baby's hair with a mild type of baby shampoo (perhaps more frequently than usual) and brushing with a very soft bristle brush to loosen the scales. You can also use a fine-toothed comb to remove the scales.

A mild soap should be used to wash any other body areas that are affected besides the hair and scalp. If the cradle cap symptoms also occur on the face and/or in the diaper area make sure a pediatrician is consulted. It is important to contact your pediatrician before using a medicated shampoo or cortisone creams.

In some cases, the doctor may prescribe an ointment containing hydrocortisone to reduce inflammation for this condition, and may also recommend use of a stronger antiseborrhic shampoo. If the condition worsens or lasts longer than three weeks, be sure to contact your baby's doctor

I used the Aveeno babywash/shampoo (for extra dry skin, its got a dark blue top) on my son. It worked wonders. My son also had dry red patches on his sholders, and that baby wash helped that go away as well. You can also buy the aveeno (for extra dry skin) lotion. if you notice dry scaly patches anywhere else on your baby's body

  10. is he on a cow's milk based formula? if he is, I would assume that's the reason.  My daughter had cradle cap when she was on formula, and I got it out by itching it out with a comb.  It went away permanently with putting her on goat milk.

  11. Try aveeno baby cream on his head.

  12. Don't use baby oil.  Its a petroleum product and only disguises the cradle cap.  It isn't absorbed into the skin and just sits on the surface and can actually make things worse!  Cradle cap is nothing at all to worry about.  It doesn't bother the baby at all, in fact it bothers you much more than it does him!

Wash his hair every day with a sensative type shampoo (I use California Baby brand Super Sensative and I love it!) and continue to bush his hair, that is really all you can do.  It will go away on its own in a few weeks or so.  Just don't worry about it, really!
