Question:

Baby Name guidelines

Some countries have laws set in place about naming children

IGNORING the constitution (for those in the USA), do you think this a good idea?

Example - Have a website (printed version available at hospitals, libraries, etc.) that has a list of all of the exceptable names and variants. Update this list yearly. If the name you want is not on the list, apply via a form and wait (planning ahead would be ideal LOL)

Please keep in mind - this is only a QUESTION and not an actual request to make this a law.

Also, please list pros and cons when answering - Thanks :-)

  1. Would you truly want your name to be some of the following when you are 30? What about 50? What about being a grand-parent or even a great-grandparent with these names!

Personally, I want to leave a better legacy for my children on-down than an off-the-wall name!

And, truly - It wouldn't take much to take the current database of names from the SSA, along with baby name books, to create a database of acceptable names. 97% of parents should be able to name their child from the "list".

  2. If it would save some poor child from being named Tallula does the Hula in Hawaii - God bless it! People seem to take naming their children as seriously as they take naming a pet fish these days. This is a HUMAN BEING. They will carry this name all their lives. Grow up and give them something respectable that will look nice on a business card.

  3. I think those laws are ridiculous, you should be able to name your child whatever you want.  However I do think that some people should have approval.  Like the woman that was on TV a few years ago for naming her baby "Norangello" because at the time she liked orange jello - that kind of c**p should be outlawed.  And I think there could be certain types of "patents" on names so that no one you know can use your name once you have it picked out if they have a child before you but you had the name first.

  4. I think it would be way too much of a hassle.

    -Too many names

    -WAY too many variations

-Another Federal Department that you have to go through with way too many issues (ex: IRS)

  5. I think it could be great because it would keep people from butchering spellings of names like turning Michaela into MacKaylahh. I don't think many would go for it though because  a lot of people seem to like names that are "unique". I guess I wouldn't be mad if it were a law, but I wouldn't become an advocate for it either.

  6. I don't think you should have to choose off of a list, however, some names are so ridiculous they should not be aloud. I mean really most people don't need a list, they name their kid after the latest trend anyway.

  7. Sounds like a waste of taxpayer money.

  8. no its not a good i idea , let people name they kids what they want , with out going overboard with it and being wild !!! Thats what makes babies names unique when the parents name them!! But dont name the kid anything like "kate loves tom", or "tula with a hula hoop", lol!!!!!
