Question:

Baby Pond Fish - What do i do ? ?

Hi, today I noticed a little baby fish in my pond. It was black and kinda hard to see but when the big orange goldfish came behind it, I could see it properly and it was definitely a fish, not tadpole. So I was wondering if I need to isolate it from the rest of the gang because in my tropical tank a while ago, the fish ate about 6 of their own babies so I thought this might happen in the pond as well.

Is there anything I need to do to help my baby fishy be safe and happy, or do I just leave nature to do it's magic?

Any help would be greatly appreciated =]

Thnx

  1. It might be an idea to separate it from the rest of your fish however, make sure that the place you put it is the same temperature as the pond it came from. if it isn't, it will be a shock to the new fish and it could kill it.

    good luck

  2. if there is a petco or something like that where u live they have a little box that keeps the baby fish seperated from the rest u can ask someone there to show u where it is!hope i helped!

  3. Well when i had 3 baby fish in my pond i just left them because i don't have a spare tank to put them in and 1 survived but it is natural to lose some but if you have somewhere to put it i would to be on the safe side especially if the other fish are big enough to eat it hole. he is much more likely to survive separate from other bigger fish indoors still getting enough food.

  4. if they are goldfish and not koi(which i knwo nothing about), they will be fine. big GF dont eat the fry.

  5. Best to leave it in the pond, if you have plants it will be able to hide till it's big enough not to be eaten. Breeders use synthetic mops for the fry to be able to hide in, (basically a floating mop head).

Birds often carry eggs from pond to pond on their feet, unless you know your fish have spawned don't assume the baby is a goldfish, it could quite easily have originated from a nearby stream or nature pond.
