Question:

Baby Proof Banister.?

I have a 19 month old son who is VERY active. I have a 2 story home. My banister on my stair case has about 3 inch wide spaces as does at the very top of my stairs for about 5 feet. I have a fear that he might try to fit between the space. Gates are not an option, he would just climb over them, which would hurt him just as much as falling from the 2nd floor. Any Ideas on what I could use at the top of the stairs for his safety?

  1. You can go to the hardware store and buy plastic safety netting, like you see on construction sites and sometimes at carnivals. Cut it to length and tie it on through the holes around the rails. It won't be the prettiest option, but peace of mind and a safe child are worth more than aesthetics.

  2. I know that this might not sound too appealing for the moment but for safety please consider this ,get some lattice painted if you wish and have it attached with screws to the railing to avoid a tragedy from happening , you can remove it later on when you feel comfortable . That is the only thing that I can think of .

PS make sure that holes are very small this way he wont climb the lattice, if you decide to go that way .

  3. Visit OneStepAhead.com and request a free catalog-they have clear barriers to put on banisters/railings for this purpose.  They come in a variety of sizes.

    I hope this helps!

  4. same idea as the previous answer, but with some neutral solid colored fabric cut to the hight of the staircase. something that's a little stronger... like canvas, or the fabric they use for sails on boats, or tent fabric ... that way he won't accidentally tear the fabric.

you can put grommets on one side and use rope to tie it criss cross to the end of the banister and maybe mug hooks (or something stronger) to attach to the wall.

sounds kinda ghetto, but might work well for the year or so until he grows out of it.
