Question:

Baby Roborovski Hamsters?

We just aquired four 4-5 week old baby robo hamsters and we have them in a 10 gal. tank. We went to the pet store looking for dwarf hamsters to put in my parent's lobby for their vet clinic for kids to look at and stuff. My mom really wanted robos because she thought they were cute. The only reason the lady let us get them was because of the fact my mom was a vet and since they were going to be lobby pets not a lot of people would be handling them. So anyway, currently in there tank they have a water bottle, some carrots, bedding, and some hamster fluff nesting stuff. I was wondering what all else we could put in there? We are going to put a food bowl in with them tonight, the lady said they are old enough to eat hamster food.

We have an igloo, a cocunut thing, and a wooden rainbow bridge thing and we wondering when will they be old enough that we can put all of that in there, where they won't accidently get squished under something?

Thanks.

  1. Hmm, since they are babies, the 10 gallon should be good, but when the get old, they definately need more space. A pair of adult robos need at least a 15 gallon tank. I would also suggest that you get 2 large igloos, just to prevent fighting. You can put the igloo and bridge in now, no need to wait :) I think it's best to wait a bit for the coconut, since that would roll.

You shouldn't just give them only carrots. You can also give them oatmeal. If the hamsters are separated from their mom though, they should be able to eat normal hamster food. They start doing this at 2-3 weeks old. Pet shops usually don't know that much about hamsters ;D Buy some just incase [get Vitakraft Menu or Hazel Hamster]. Make sure you take out fresh food [carrots, oatmeal, etc.] 20 minutes after you put it in to prevent rotten food.

You should take out the hamster fluff. Cotton isn't easily digested, so if a hamster eats it, it can get impacted in the cheek pouch/stomach and it would die. As for what else to put in the cage, you should get them a large wheel as soon as possible [DON'T GET A RUNGED WHEEL. Your hamsters can get their feet caught in the rungs]. I use a silent spinner for my robo.

Other than that, you have basically everything you need :) Make sure you don't use pine or cedar bedding [use aspen, carefresh, yesterday's news, etc.]. Try to pick up some hamster food as soon as possible! Good luck, robos are amazing!

  2. Hamsters should stay with their mom until they're around 14 weeks old!So they might die! This happened to my hamster!

  3. Since your mom works at a vet, she should already know that they need to be sexed as soon as possible because they will mate and you will have tons of hamsters soon. Keep the males and females separate unless you want to fill 5 of these 10 gal tanks.

Assuming that you already knew about that, if you got them from a pet store, they should already be old enough to put things in the tank. Also, you may want to put at least two igloos in the tank incase some of the hamsters are not as social and do not want to sleep with the others.
