Question:

Baby Shower?

I've noticed a lot lately that many women have been throwing their own baby showers. I personally think it's a little tacky. In fact, I think throwing any short of gift party for yourself seems kind of tactless to me. What are your feelings on this?

Also, ever since I can remember there was an unspoken rule that a woman only got *one* baby shower (or two if she had separate ones for different sides of the family) and that was during her first pregnancy. I've noticed that a lot of women are having a baby shower with each new pregnancy. What do you think of this?

  1. I agree it is tacky to throw your own baby shower.  I also agree with the unspoken rule ONE BABY SHOWER.  I feel as though I have a baby shower or bridal shower to attend every weekend.

  2. I totally agree, it is rude to throw your own shower, or even be involved in the planning. And I don't understand how the notion that "every baby deserves to be celebrated" translates into a gift-grab for the parents. A baby can be celebrated when it is born. A shower is to help a family get ready to welcome a baby into a home- totally unecessary when there are already three kids in the house! That's what Christnenings and Bris are for- welcoming a baby. Not a shower.

  3. I'm totally in agreement on both points.  I don't think there's anything wrong with being excited about a coming baby and wanting to celebrate it with your family and friends, but I definitely think if you throw the celebration yourself you shouldn't call it a shower and you should specify "no gifts".  Or you could wait until after the birth and have a "welcome home" party for the new baby, which you can throw yourself.

  4. I recently was invited to a second-time-around baby shower (different gender, 3 yrs apart, thrown by coworkers) and I knew that they probably had some things already from the first baby.  I figured that I would just buy something that would have needed to be replaced.  I got them a bottle drying rack that they had on a target wish list.  I didn't feel weird about it since we didn't know them with the first child.  I think its great to celebrate.  I won't be having a baby shower for my second child (If I ever get around to making a 2nd baby).  I got way too much stuff at the party and didn't even use it all.  Plus, now I know what is really essential when a baby comes into the world.

Don't get all upset about it.  Doesn't do your heart good to get bent out of shape - just accept it and be kind to the new (again) mom.

  5. I do agree that it's tacky to throw one for yourself. However, I'm on the fence about the multiple shower thing. If your children have a big age gap between them or are a different gender then I think it's fine to have another shower. If not then a "Welcome to the World" party when the baby is born should suffice.

  6. I agree that it is tacky to throw yourself a shower.  But, if someone offers to throw a shower for your 2nd, 3rd,  ect. baby then I say go for it.  Every baby deserves to be celebrated.  It is up to each guest invited whether they want to attend and what gift to give if any!

  7. Throwing a baby shower for yourself is asking for gifts and that's tacky.  I personally don't think anything is wrong with having a "meet the baby" party though : )

Baby showers are more for the parents to be to get items they may need.. It's not about Celebrating a baby.

  8. i agree that you shouldnt throw your own shower. I am pregnant with my second and having a shower. I had my son early so i never got a baby shower the first time around. we are also having a girl this time around so we will be needing alot of things since we cant reuse our first borns baby clothes and blankets etc.

  9. I do agree that you should not be throwing your own shower. But I don't think there is anything wrong with having more then one shower. Every child is a new blessing and deserves to be treated as such.
