Question:

Baby Siemese Fighters on the horizon?

Hey there,

I recently bought a male and female Siemese fighter fish, and this morning I noticed a lot of what looked like bubble on the surface on the water. Know doing my research in some books I have, I know that this is how fighter fish lay there eggs.

I know for a fact there are not bubbles as they don't pop when touched. I also noticed that my khuli loach was watching them in the corner of the tank.

I need to know if they are eggs and if there are, what do I do with them?

Thanks in advanced,

  1. Takes time....

if they are eggs, remove the female ASAP!!!

Let the male stay there... remove them once the babies are able to swim freely...

    then, happily ever after

  2. That is a bubble nest but with an unconditioned pair there's unlikely to be viable eggs, and if there were, as soon as they drop, tankmates will eat them.

Separate the male and female, at some point they're more likely to kill each other than breed. You are not ready for breeding bettas, you need dozens of tanks and live food cultures to do this, they cannot be bred in a community tank. Store bought bettas are usually too old to breed anyway and any fry would be ugly mutts as you won't know their family history.

  3. Looks like the male is practising making a bubble nest, my dwarf gourami did this now he has shredded my plants up an is chasing the female and bless her she is full of eggs but looks battered. If he is practising it should not be to long. They do not like fast moving water.Remember to take the female out as she will eat the eggs and if you do have eggs and you are lucky enough for them to hatch the male will also eat the fry.

  4. Hi Cass,

From what i can see from your pic it is only a bubble nest which as you know is what the male builds when he is ready to mate.  Some male Bettas are gently when mating but not often so there probably would be visible signs on your female that they had had some fun time.  Also the process can take hours so you probably should have noticed.  In regards to splitting them apart?  It depends on the size of your tank and whether the female has enough places to hide.  Sadly if they do mate and hatch, other fish in the tank will eat them :-(  If you do want to breed.  I recommend them in a tank on your own and collect as many jam jars as you can as you need to identify your male fry quickly and split them up as the males will kill each, even as fry.  They do not need a heater or filter, just keep them clean with fresh oxygenated water.

    :-)

  5. If they were really having babies the male would have ripped the female to pieces by now, weird that he hasn't already! it could just mean he is happy, my little fighter 'George' used to do this all the time and there wasn't even a female about. that little guy was cool.
