Question:

Baby Sparrow Help?

I found two baby sparrows about two weeks ago. They were about a week old. I have been caring for them since there are no nearby rehabilitators for sparrows. I've been feeding then a scrambled egg mixture with toast and a tiny bit of milk since they arrived. My mom recommended that because she raised a baby Blue Jay on it and he lived for a very long time. One of them passed away sadly a few days ago after showing signs of illness. It only had one eye open at a time and looked a little puffed up. It also would not accept food well at all and only chirped quietly. Now the second one is showing the same signs. Do you have any idea what could be causing this and how I can cure it before it gets worse or he dies? Note: I also bring him to my work with me, which is about a 10 minute commute. He is kept in basically a metal wired hamster cage with at least two places for him to go inside and has two wodden branches he sits on and sleeps on. Any help is appreiated.

  1. Well I know its hard to admit but there are something that humans can not do for wild birds.

The bird might not be adjusting or the food could have problems as it is not from its mother mouth.

I think the best things is to take it to a vet before you get too attached and they will look after it and help it recover.

The little Sparrow could also be put back into the wild and be like all the other sparrows.

Most wild bird which are taken in by humans usually die.

Usually because it is not who they are and they become distressed and get depressed without even knowing it.

    Take it to a vet.

    Good luck

  2. I would take him to the vets, some vets take baby wild birds.  Sounds like it is dying like it's silbling.  Maybe it is not digesting well?  But just guessing.  Good Luck with the little guy

  3. The reason the sparrow died is because you starved it to death..that diet you are feeding it is what killed it.  Birds do not drink milk, and eggs and bread would not supply the nutrients it needs.  Why did you not return these birds to their parents in the first place...they may have been fledglings (birds that left their nest on their own) and were being cared for by the parents and did not even need rescue.  If they fell out of the nest..you should have returned them to the nest.  Look here for a proper diet for sparrows..it is readily available on the internet...you should have done some research on your own.

If these are anything besides House Sparrows...it is actually illegal for you to care for them, you need to turn them over to a rehab:
