Question:

Baby Sparrows?

I found two baby sparrows underneath the bushes in our backyard yesterday. They must have fallen from there nest. My question is do I leave them alone and vulnerable to prey and the sun. Or is there anything I can do to help them out?

  1. Put on some wet gloves and pick them up very carefully. If they pee on you, don't drop them. Just put them back in their nest, or if you cant reach it, put them somewhere shady and safe from predators.

  2. Well first try to find the nest. No it's not true that if you touch them the parents won't care for them anymore. Birds have a poor sense of smell. How feathered are they? They might be learning to fly, and waiting for the parents to come back with food. If no parents have appeared after an hour, you should call a local wild animal center. They might not take them though, and at that point it's up to you whether you want to take them in or not (yes I know this is illegal...). If you do decide to do that, know that there's a good chance they might die anyways if they don't have many feathers yet, as these ones seem to be extremely fragile. You can keep them in a box or in a bird cage if they've started flapping around (put a towel in the bottom for them). You can feed them Exact baby bird formula (I feed with 1/8 tsp measuring spoons). After a while, when they learn to be more active, you can put this in a small dish and they'll eat themselves. Good luck!

  3. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. Look for a rehab here:

  4. or you could look after them, I found a thrush when younger which was very young, nearly bald, and fed the worms and water, bath, a little bread with fat on it like bacon fat after a couple of weeks, not heavy stuff like from a roast. Mostly worms, but do not overfeed. The thing grew like a dream and I always left the window open and one day when the time was right, it followed the rest of the thrushes.

  5. Pick them up with a fresh clean cloth & put them back Silly Boy
