Question:

Baby Turtle?!?

I rescued a brand new baby turtle. She is adorable. Period. (BTW, I named her Brooke :D) I need to find out what breed turtle she is.

FACE AND HEAD:

her nose is slightly pointed, but only a little bit. Her head has four yellow stripes (two on each side) on the side, they are very thin. Long neck. Has very, very, very, very, teeny spots on the neck.

TOP SHELL:

Pretty tall, with four or five ridges on top. The edges have small yellow stripes.

BOTTOM SHELL:

Black with yellow splotches on it.

She is just a hatchling. **AMAZING**- she's the size of a quarter!!!!

She NOT one of the following breeds....

-Painted Turtle

-Snapping Turtle

I don't think that it's a mud turtle or a musk turtle because she doesn't secrete a smell when she's handled.

Can you help me?

  1. awww where did u find her?im guess shes a red eared slider turtle

  2. Knowing where in the US you are would really help.

You can try the 'World of Turtles' photo gallery of turtles at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com or search for 'turtles [your state]'. Most states have a photo gallery of local animals.

Just FYI- catching wild animals, especially babies, is illegal in much of the US- they are either covered under game and fish laws, or endangered/threatened species acts, etc.

It is also not a good idea from a pet keeping view- wild-caught animals are usually parasite ridden, badly stressed by captivity, do not thrive, etc.

FYI: my guess is a Yellow-belly Slider

  3. Why do you say you "rescued" it? You caught it. If it is green with yellow markings and you are in north America it is a map, false map, slider, or cooter. Snappers, musk, and mud turtles all have very small plastrons. By ridges do you mean k***s in one row down the middle of it's back? That is probably a map turtle. It IS LEGAL to own a small turtle, it is not legal to SELL turtles under 4 inches except for educational or scientific purposes, and the SALMONELLA thing(a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing). ALL turtles adults as well as babies CAN (not do) carry salmonella bacteria. So CAN lizards, snakes, alligators, chickens, parrots, and most recently TOMATOES. Wash your hands after you handle any animal and before you eat. It MAY be illegal in your area to take animals from the wild.

  4. caspian i think

  5. I have a few guesses of what it is.

    -Caspian Turtle

    -Peninsula Cooter

That's all I have, Try taking him/her to a vet or a professional.

  6. Is it an aquatic turtle or a land tortoise? From your description it may be a yellow bellied turtle. Also to legally own a turtle or tortoise if the belly is less than 4 inches long anywhere in the US. If they are less than 4 inches they only have a 10% chance of survival. You need to put her back where you found her, immediately. You do know the total cost for a turtle set up will cost you over $300.00?! If you do keep her make sure you have UVB lighting. If you don't have UVB lighting the shell will rot and the turtle will die. UVB lighting simulates the sun and emits vitamin D which promotes healthy shell growth. But I strongly advise you to put her back out in the wild. After all keeping her is illegal.

  7. You should go onto your local wildlife organization website and see if they show a list of the diff. types of turtle in your area or on another site with the diff turtles. Also it is illegal in the US to have a baby turtle under 4in. and to take animals from the wild. I think its ok if you get it out of your own yard but its still illegal to have one under 4in. Please remember to be careful w/ her!

  8. An eastern box turtle or a 3-toed box turtle.I googled it(baby eastern box turtle photographs,) try that.

    Hope I helped.

  9. sounds like a red eared slider to me!.. but maybe a picture?

also if she really is a red eared slider, she'll need a tank to swim around.
