K my cat brought home 2 baby birds.. they got feathers.. I know you cant care for them or they will die(usually). All i need to do is keep them alive for 2 days, just until my dad comes home so he can find the nest. Any ideas how to feed them or keep them alive for 48 hrs?

  1. try luke warm baby formula mixed to directions for a new born and feed it through an eye dropper. let them l**k from the dropper instead of trying to feed them. you risk filling their lungs with fluid. keep them warm- simulate a nest best as you can. close watch is also needed until signs of improvement is seen.

  2. Okay, many people on here have mentioned that the parent birds will not take the babies back. It is FALSE. Birds don't have a sense of smell. You can confirm this by looking up info on wildlife websites regarding fledglings.

A mash of baby beef food, applesauce, egg yolk, and cornmeal is a good substitute for their regular diet. If you find a couple of soft bugs, offer them to the birds. If they are feathered chances are they are fledglings. They will learn to fly in a few days. Normally, the parent birds take care of their young on the ground feeding them and scaring predators away. Fledglings need to exercise and learn how to forage for themselves. I am sure they have not been abandoned especially if they are thriving and have big, luscious poops!

Try placing them in the area they came from (if you know, of course). Their calls will attract their parents as they recognize their young by sight and sound. If you're concerned take the time to stand far enough away as to not to scare the parents off and observe if they're being cared for.

Bird banders handle birds all the time. Parents of these birds NEVER reject their young. It is a myth.

If you decide to continue to feed them with a syringe, ensure it goes down far enough past their breathing tube (it is a small hole in their mouth).

Contacting a licensed wildlife rehabber (rehabilitator) in your area might be the next best thing to do. They are qualified and the birds are able to mix with their species. Just like people, birds are very social.

  3. make sure they are warm, and get fed like every 3 hours, feed them mashed up bits of fruit, or bugs, or maybe fish. dont handle them too much because then your scent will be on them and the mother wont come back, but she probably wont anyway.

maybe you should just keep them

  4. roll tiny balls of bread and open there beak, carefully shove it down. make sure its really small.  the mother wont take them back, they have lost their smell, youll have to raise them now good luck!

  5. take warm water and cat food mush it up and put in in a medicane droper feed them every 35 min and your dad finding a nest isnt a good idea u have already touched them so u should call your local animal shelter and they will have some1 come out and take him to some 1 how cares for baby birds believe me i haeve been in the same place you r good luck

  6. You don't have two days.  You need to do something immediately.

Find a rehabilitator, and quickly, or these birds will die.  Cats have a bacteria in their saliva which is deadly to birds.   Unless the birds are treated with specific antibiotic therapy, they have little chance of survival.

In the US, rehabilitation is regulated by the Federal government and State DNR (Dept of Natural Resources), or Dept of Fish and Game. Services are free to the public, as all native wild birds are protected by federal law.

There are several sites with listing of rehabbers, although the easiest way to find one is to search Yahoo! or Google for "wildlife rehabilitation" + your state (try both full and abbreviated). Also search on DNR or DFG + rehabilitation + your state.

You may be able to find a contact for a nearby rehabber through your local humane society, animal shelter, or police department.

Please keep your cat indoors.  They do not belong outdoors with our native wildlife - especially during nesting season.

  7. If the birds have ANY wounds at all from the cat..they will quickly get and infection and die without antibiotic treatment.  It needs a to go to a wildlife rehab, as cats carry a lot of bacteria in their saliva.  If they have no wounds and if the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. Look for a rehab here:
