A neighbors dog was playing with it so they rescued it and are now wondering what to do to keep it alive. Feed it worms and water?

  1. If the dog was playing with it, it probably couldn't fly. Go back to where they found it - its nest is probably around there somewhere. Put it back in. Don't worry that you touched it - birds don't have much of a sense of smell and won't reject it just because a human touched it.

If you can't find the nest, get ready to feed it every 15 minutes or so for about 12 hours a day. Live mealworms will work, and are available at pet stores and at The Wild Bird (a retail chain in the US). Baby birds need very little water, also.

    Good luck!

  2. ok, thats just silly what that first person said. uknow u can't just leave it to be chewed on by the neighbor's dog. i would contact the local pet stores, especially shops specializing in birds. they should sell formula or something for baby birds.if i couldnt get to them yet i would feed it some water and (as long as there r not pesticides in ur yard) feed it some aphids and ants (i had a baby bushtit and baby goldfinches in the yard that loved both bugs). see if there r any rescues in ur area that have advice. baby birds need LOTS of food, so definitely find some kind of formula so they r getting nourishment :)

  3. You know if you feed it worms you would have to chew it the spit it in its mouth like the mother dose

  4. it will die. you should have left it where it was. the mother must have pushed it out of its nest. call your local conservation dept. and see if they have any suggestions.

  5. Find its nest, or a rescue.  If you chose to keep it you have to feed it every 10-15 minutes and the odds are it will still die.  It is true that birds have a bad sense of smell and will not reject the bird.  I have a tree outside my house where Ive had to place several baby birds back and I have never seen them reject any.

Also there are many types of wild birds that you need to have a liscense for to keep.

  6. i believe that is what you would feed a baby sparrow because that is what it would eat in the wild. Just be careful because you could scare it from being around humans and don't keep it captive too long and let it go because it will most likely die because of the big change from being given food and water  verses finding it's own food, water, and shelter. Hope this helped you out.  (:

  7. mash up seeds and grubs with water turning it into a mucus and feed, and water it through a mini baby bottle then put it under a light in a card board box with tisseus or towels this should work as it worked for one of my baby quails which was on the verge of death

  8. If it was in the mouth of a dog then it most likely needs immediate antibiotic treatment.  Mammals carry a disease deadly to birds.  Check the bird for and wounds.

Put the bird in a container lined with paper towel and cover with a towel.  Keep the bird warm and in a quiet location.

NEVER feed worms they can cause gapeworm which can be fatal, never feed bread, milk, hamburger.  Do not put liquid in a birds mouth, doing so may kill it.  Baby sparrows do not eat seed.  Feed using a dog/cat food mixture found in my profile. Us a stir stick or the end of a straw cut to a spoon.

To help the chance of survival you need to find a wildlife rehabber to take the bird and treat it for infection.

  9. I think yes. The baby bird needs a lot of protein (worms) and maybe water too. I'm no expert, but I did rescue a baby bird once. Try feeding it water, not too much, with an eyedropper and hold a worm over its head like its mom would do.

  10. very hard to raise a baby sparrow check for injuries first if the dog was playing with it dont over handle it keep it warm dry and in a dark box call your local wildlife trust for advice sometimes they will even come and collect them

  11. Soak dog food to feed it until you can bring it to a rehabilitator. You can find a list of rehabbers online generally through your wildlife rehabilitation website for your state.
